Lake Providence -- Mission Serve Camp 2009
185 Participants Worked on 13 Homes

Twenty-one students and seven adults from Calvary Church, Little Rock joined forces with churches from 5 other states the week of July 12 for a week of service in Lake Providence, LA.  Lake Providence is located in East Carroll Parish, the second poorest county in the United States. 

Serve Management Group, which hosted the week, divided participants into work crews, composed of 5-8 students and 2 adults.  Each work crew was assigned to a home, which needed either a fresh coat of paint or a new roof.  Accomplishing these tasks meant early mornings for the crews.  Team members woke up before 6 am, so they could arrive at the work site by 6:30 am. Each day’s work ended around 4 pm, when tired crews would return to their home for the week, Lake Providence High School.  Evenings were devoted to corporate worship and church group time, giving participants time to reflect on the events of the day. 



By the end of the week, the 185 participants had completed work on 13 homes.  The Calvary Students came away from this experience most moved by the relationships they formed with the residents of Lake Providence.  God then used these relationships to transform the way many of the students conceive the Christian Life.  One of the students, Landon Trulove, said, “I left the week with a different understanding of what it means to be a Christian.  I now believe that the word sacrifice might best describe what it means to be a follower of Christ.”

CBF-LA partnered with Mission Serve for a week of
mission camp in Lake Providence in East Carroll Parish.
Mission Serve is a coeducational, all church missions
experience sponsored by Serve Management Group.

Mission Serve gives students and adults the opportunity to minister
and help change the lives of communities around the world.
The projects are student driven with a praise band and a speaker.

All participants were divided into separate squads for the week,
and spent each day working on low income housing.
Everyone came together in the evening for worship and devotion times.

There was also time for basketball, football and just hanging out.
